TEMAZCAL RITUAL

Ya'ax Che Spa offers the rare opportunity to take part in a traditional Mesoamerican ritual called temazcal. It is one of the few spas in the Yucatan Peninsula that offer this authentic purification and relaxation ritual. The name temazcal is derived from two words in the Aztec language of Nahuatl: temaz (bath) and calli (house).

Used in Mexico for centuries, temazcal is an ancient steam bath with curative and therapeutic benefits. Believed to balance body, mind, and spirit, this ceremonial custom was practiced to prepare people for major life transitions, such as marriage, birth, and other special occasions.

This purification ritual takes place near the sacred waters of a cenote in a natural hut (sweat house) built by the Nahuatl Aztec people. Inside the hut, hot water is poured over heated stones in a pit to evoke steam. This cleansing experience is accompanied by traditional music and ends with an option to cool off in the clear cenote water.

Cocoa creates a unique and remarkable wrap containing vitamins A and E, which maintains high moisture levels in skin and contributes to natural radiance and a youthful glow. This ritual includes heat wraps which stimulate muscular and mental relaxation, and eliminate toxins and excess water in the muscles. The ritual includes use of spirulina algae, copal incense purification in the room, body bath, and application of purifying cream.
